The Case for Adopting an Adult Cat
Kittens, they’re tiny, sweet and adorable. However, they’re also chaotic, full of energy and unpredictable. And while we love kittens as much as the next person, maybe even more, they aren’t always the right fit for every adopter. Now, don’t get us wrong, we aren’t trying to sway you away from bringing one of these tiny beasts home, however, if you’re open to alternatives, it’s worth considering an adult cat to become your new furry BFF. Want to learn more? Here are six reasons we love adult cats.
They Radiate Chill Vibes
While energy levels vary across the board, in comparison to kittens, adult cats are more mellow, laid back and all-around chill. However, that’s not to say they’ll just sit around and sleep all day — although some very well may — many cats maintain a healthy desire for play, fun and activity well into old age. Unlike kittens who are go, go, go, crash for a quick nap and then ready to go again, play sessions with adult cats are more manageable making them a good fit for someone who might not have the time or energy to keep up with the demands of a younger cat.
Similarly, adult cats are an excellent choice for people craving those coveted kitty cuddles as their lower energy levels mean they’re often eager to curl up on your lap or retreat to their favorite napping spot.
They’ve Grown Into Their Personality
Cats undergo a lot of changes in the time it takes to go from a kitten to a fully grown adult. One perk of adopting an adult cat is what you see is often what you get when it comes to personality. And while shelters aren’t always the best gauge for a cat’s true character — they might be scared, stressed or uncomfortable — when you have the chance to spend quality one-on-one time together like you do here at Almost Home, you can get a decent feel for a cat’s disposition. From sweet and chatty to independent and bold, every cat is different, and that’s part of the fun.
They’ll Embrace Your Routine
If one thing is true about cats it’s that they love their routines. From the time they wake up in the morning to when their meals are served, they’re most content when things stay the same. And while every cat requires a little extra work at first no matter their age, if you don’t have the time to train and establish new routines with a kitten you might find an older cat picks up on and adapts to your schedule more quickly.
You’ll Love Being Their Person
While a trusting kitten will bond to new people no problem, adult cats can be a little more hesitant. Like many of us, cats can have baggage causing them to be shy or take longer to warm up to new people. While obviously not every cat will have these traits — some are cool and confident right out the gate — when attempting to bond with a tender feline, there’s no better feeling than the moment you realize you’ve officially become their person, for which you’ll be rewarded with endless cuddles, head bonks and purrs.
They’re Often Overlooked
Adult cats are often overlooked in favor of their younger counterparts. The sad reality is, while kittens are always in demand, adults can wait in shelters or foster care for weeks, months or even years. In many cases, when you adopt an adult cat you’re literally saving their life as they’re often the first to be euthanized when shelters become overcrowded.
Their Adoption Fee Is Lower
The adoption fee for adults is typically cheaper than the fee for kittens making them a great choice for someone who wants a new furry friend but doesn’t necessarily have a big budget. Sometimes you can even snag a deal on a bonded pair, which we love because the only thing better than one cat is two!
